Young people given more say over quality of activities

AN army of young inspectors have been deployed to examine youth activities in the Borough and have more say in their quality.

Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council’s Youth Service provided Charnwood Youth Council members with an intensive two-day training course to teach them to carry out inspections of activities funded by Positive Activities for Young People.

Positive Activities are activities delivered by youth clubs and projects, uniformed groups, churches, youth charities, sports organisations and others throughout Charnwood. They are funded .

They are funded through Leicestershire County Council money made available through Charnwood Borough Council which manages the Positive Activity fund alongside a group of partners.

Youth Councillor Louis Bartlett said: "The training was really fun and productive. I feel I'm much better equipped to inspect the PAYP activities and I'm really looking forward to seeing them."

Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: "There is no better way for us to improve youth services in the borough than by getting detailed feedback from the people who use them.

"Our youth councillors really embraced the training and the responsibility of the task at hand.

"This project will provide invaluable learning for activity providers and members of the funding assessment panels alike."

And Andrew Lake, a Youth Service youth worker, said: "I think that training these young people to undertake the inspections is brilliant – real creative thinking that gives young people more of a say about the quality of the youth activities and support they receive."
