Council Leader's Statement on Loughborough Inner Relief Road

Council Leader David Slater's statement on the announcment of Government funding for the Loughborough Town Centre Transport Project

AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR LOUGHBOROUGH

"The announcement of Government funding for the Loughborough Town Centre Transport Project is brilliant news for Loughborough and for Charnwood as a whole.  This project, which includes the construction of an inner relief road, is an essential part of the Loughborough Town Centre Masterplan and its delivery is fundamental to the town centre’s development and regeneration.

"The project will change the very heart of Loughborough.  The town centre is currently divided in two by the heavy traffic running through its heart on the former A6.  The new relief road will remove through traffic from the centre of the town, reducing congestion and enabling better bus access and facilities.  There will also be substantial improvements in the environment, safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

"The transport scheme also greatly improves prospects for the regeneration of several major brown field sites within the town centre, which adjoin the new relief road and include the former General Hospital site.  The scheme lies within Hastings Ward, one of the most deprived in the County, and will help to build confidence in this area and hopefully encourage further improvements and regeneration.

“This project is a tremendous investment in the town and is fantastic news for businesses and residents alike as we hope it will bring new opportunities to Loughborough and to Charnwood.”

The proposed upgrade around the forest road epinal way junction is going to cause more accidents. Making traffic faster moving through here is going to kill more people. Loughborough does not need multi lane highways - it needs roads which are smaller and less of a barrier to the people who dont insist on sitting in cars there. Better to turn the junctions there and at the park road junction into straight crossroads with traffic lights. I've been knocked off twice at the park road junction and its the fault of the stupidly large junction which encourages drivers to speed.

where will the current  bus stops be if the road past the market place is pedestrianized?
