Take in the View at Games Time Spectacular
Charnwood Borough Council is setting up a special viewing platform so wheelchair users can enjoy next weekend’s spectacular Games Time show in Southfield Park.
Around 120 people from the borough will star alongside professional dancers in a free and spectacular celebration of youth on Saturday, June 9.
The show, which is suitable for children aged five and upwards, runs for an hour starting at 9.30pm and culminates in a spectacular firework display. Gates open at 8.30pm.
The viewing platform is for people with their carers who wish to view the event in a wheelchair. There are only 20 spaces in the car park and will be available on a first come, first served basis.
People are being advised to book in advance for car park spaces by contacting Charnwood Borough Council on 01509 634843 (Wednesday, June 6 to Friday June 8 from 8.30am to 5pm and on the day of the event from 8.30am to 12.30pm). They can also be e-mailed at council.tax@charnwood.gov.uk
Councillor Paul Harley, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, who is in the cast, said: “This promises to be a spectacular evening full of colour and vibrancy and brings together youngsters in what will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them.
“It is suitable for children aged five years and upwards but I know their parents and grandparents will enjoy the event too. It should be a great night.”
The youngsters, who have already been involved in a full-scale dress rehearsal at Loughborough College’s Radmoor Centre, will be split into teams and thrill the crowds with depictions of mythical characters, including a minotaur, dragon and phoenix.
They will play a game of movement, colour and battle for team supremacy on a giant chequered board.
Another exciting element to the show is the spectacular pyrotechnic display by Walk the Plank, the country’s leading firework designers.
With Loughborough taking centre-stage as the host base for Team GB ahead of London 2012, Games Time is an exciting appetiser to the Olympics and has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Stephen Munn, Executive Producer of Déda Producing said: “The event brings together world class artistic and production partners and gives people in the East Midlands a once in a lifetime chance to be part of celebrations around the Olympic Games.
“With the GB team being based in Loughborough for the Olympics, this is the perfect venue for us and with only a few days to go everyone is fired up and excited, and looking forward to a great night’s entertainment.”
There will also be Games Time stations at Picnic in the Park in Queen’s Park, Loughborough, on Tuesday, June 5 and at the World Fair and Craft Market in Market Square on Wednesday, June 6. The event forms part of the 11-day Welcome World Week in Charnwood.
