Recycling Amnesty for Students

A RECYCLING amnesty for students is taking place in the Storer Road and Kingfisher Way areas of Loughborough on Saturday (June 23).

The annual amnesty has been organised by Charnwood Borough Council’s Environmental Services team in partnership with Serco, the Council’s waste management partner, and runs from 8am to 3pm.

The amnesty targets around 1,500 student properties in the Storer Road area and 300 in Kingfisher Way.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “Students helped make last year’s amnesty a record breaker and I hope we can achieve similar results again this year!

“The amnesty is now in its third year and is the Council’s way of encouraging students to help us keep the Borough clean, tidy and healthy for everyone.”

The amnesty coincides with the end of the academic year for many students, and last year, the Environmental Services team collected nine metric tons of recycling, dozens of sacks of clothes and household goods and around 30 electrical items.

Leaflets and white Mind sacks, for textiles, have been delivered to student properties in these areas ahead of the amnesty.

Recycling material should be placed in green bins wherever possible. Anything that doesn’t fit in the bin should be clearly labelled.

Bulky items can be left at the kerbside or, if it is raining, they can be kept inside until collection,

Any items of furniture, electrical goods, clothes, soft furnishings or bric-a-brac of good quality will be donated to mental health charity Mind and Sofa, an organisation based in Clarence Street,, Loughborough, which re-uses furniture and electrical goods.

Tins, packets and jars of food within their expiry date can also be donated to St Peter’s Community Centre in Storer Road.
