Charnwood Again Flying the Green Flag

Blubells in the Outwoods

CHARNWOOD beauty spot The Outwoods has retained its coveted Green Flag status following visits from Keep Britain Tidy judges.

It means that The Outwoods has won the accolade, which recognises and rewards the country’s best green spaces, every year since 2007.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “The Green Flag awards are a tribute to the work of the staff who have made this happen.

“That has been confirmed by the judges and I can only urge people to visit this special place. There is no entry fee so go and enjoy!

“Winning this type of award demonstrates our ongoing commitment to protecting our environment for future generations.”

The Green Flag accolade is a difficult award to achieve, with green spaces having to meet eight key criteria – a welcoming place, healthy, safe and secure, clean and well maintained, sustainability, conservation and heritage, community involvement, marketing and management.

Award-winning sites throughout the country, including The Outwoods, will now be raising their flags throughout the week and celebrating their success during Love Parks Week, which runs from July 21 to 28.

Organisers have reported a record number of sites receiving an award this year, and Paul Todd, Green Flag Award scheme manager, said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.

“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the achievements of all those whose hard work and dedication has helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy. “
