The Search Is on to Find Charnwood's Sporting Heroes
IT IS time again to salute the sporting heroes of Charnwood.
Nominations are now being sought for the 2012 Charnwood Sports Awards when the Borough Council recognises the achievements of teams and individuals as well as the work of dedicated volunteers.
The closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday, October 7 and there will be a presentation evening planned in December at Loughborough College.
The Sports Awards are sponsored this year by Fusion Lifestyle, the Borough Council’s leisure centre management partner, swimwear manufacturers Zoggs, property and construction consultants Castons and AFG Fire Group.
Councillor David Snartt, the Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “The Charnwood Sports Awards provide a brilliant opportunity for the community to recognise and reward local sportsmen and women whose achievements and leadership inspire and motivate others in the name of sport.”
Last year’s senior sportsperson was golfer Melissa Reid, who helped Europe to victory over the United States in last year’s Solheim Cup.
Other successful winners at last year’s Awards included netball administrator Sue Jones, who won the Outstanding Contribution to Sport category for her sterling work with the Shepshed Netball League.
She said: “I was delighted to receive the accolade and it led to a nomination to carry the Olympic Torch which duly happened and that was a day I will never forget.”
