Charnwood Mayor Announces Charity Causes

CHARNWOOD Mayor, Councillor Diane Wise, has launched her charity appeal which will help two local organisations during her year of office.

Both the Our Space Appeal and the Baldwin Trust will be supported by Cllr Wise, who has expressed the hope that people in Charnwood will back the fund-raising events.

Cllr Wise said: “I am pleased to offer my support to these groups as they both benefit the local community. I am sure the residents of Charnwood will support the fund-raising effort during my term of office.”

The Our Space Appeal is a £1.4m appeal to transform the children and young people’s cancer unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Debbie Alderstein, of the Our Space Appeal, said: “We were thrilled to show the Mayor around the proposed site for the new facility for our young cancer patients and we are truly grateful for her support in this way.”

The Rothley-based Baldwin Trust, founded in 1988, organises canal and river day trips on specially-adapted narrow boats for groups, including families, the elderly, disabled and those with special needs.

John Townsend, of the Baldwin Trust, said: “We are grateful to the Mayor for including the Trust in her charity appeal.  This will help us to sustain our operations in the Charnwood area for 2013 to the benefit of deserving groups.”

By tradition, the annual Mayor’s appeal is always well supported by people in the Borough and money raised has come from a variety of events including a sale of recycled textiles, raffles, church collections, donations and the Mayor’s own charity events.
