Loughborough in Bloom
Loughborough has been taking part in East Midlands in Bloom since 2009. The aim of the competition is to encourage the improvement of our surroundings through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping. It also aims to achieve a litter free and sustainable environment.
East Midlands in Bloom is an annual competition organised by the EMIB Regional Committee, and is the Regional Competition of ‘Britain in Bloom’.
The aim of the competition is to encourage the improvement of our surroundings through the imaginative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping. It also aims to achieve a litter free and sustainable environment. This links directly to the three RHS core pillars of excellence which are:
- Horticultural Achievement
- Environmental Responsibility
- Community Participation
By taking on board the above criteria and using the whole community to get involved many communities have reported the following benefits:
- Increase in Civic Pride through local people taking on the planning and management of their environment
- Long term improvement in their local environment through planting floral displays and improved cleanliness
- A boost to the local economy through increased tourism
- Regeneration of disadvantaged areas
- Stimulation of voluntary work and co-operation between community groups
- A means to address issues such as sustainability, recycling, minimising waste and conservation
Loughborough has been taking part in East Midlands in Bloom since 2009 when it was rewarded with a Royal Horticultural Society Silver Medal.
In 2010, the town won a Silver Gilt Medal and a Gold in the Best Front Garden Special Awards category as well as the T & D Randall’s Least Littered Environment Award as the cleanest town in the East Midlands. 2010 also saw our Thorpe Acre Residents Association receive a judge’s award for its project at Thorpe Acre Green.
In 2011 Loughborough took the top prize winning the prestigious Gold Award and Best Small City in the East Midlands. Harry Cook’s garden at 154 Forest Road won Gold for the Best Residential Garden and the Three Close Tenants’ Association won the Judges’ Award.
The town repeated its success in 2012 and again scooped a Gold Award in the Best Small City in the East Midlands category as well as winning the category outright. Queen’s Park won a discretionary award for horticultural excellence in parks while Chapman Street Garden Association won a special Judge’s Award and the Beacon public house on Beacon Road won the Bronze Award for the Best Hotel/Pub Garden or Display.
